Its always been known as the American Independence Day. July 4th is just the date. We should not celebrate it on the first Friday in July, because the Declaration of Independence was signed on that specific date. Besides, if we moved it to the first Friday of July, it would just be another holiday that nobody is sure when it happens.

The official holiday that falls on the 4th of July IS Independence Day. The significance of this holiday IS the date, the 4th of July. Three day weekends are nice, but this is a holiday that commemorates a specific thing that happened on a specific date. Changing it just to get a three day weekend would just be wrong.

Are you serious? Why should we make it convenient for someone when all but retail business are closed? This holiday is about celebrating our freedom, not "going out on the town" or even going to a parade, it's about remembering those that set forth the stepping stone so that we, today, have more freedoms and liberties than they had.

It should and will always remain Independence Day on the 4th of July.

First off, you don't change a holiday because it's more convienant. Holidays are to remember what has happened in the past, or honor certain members of society. The 4th of July is just a nickname for Independance Day, which is the official name of the holiday.

July 4 was when the Declaration of Independence was signed. So why would we celebrate when it was still being written in that month and year way back in the Revolutionary War times?

You can celebrate our independence day every day and we have a lot to celebrate. The 4Th of July is the historical day.

then why dont we just celebrate xmas on the third friday of december then? We earned our independence on the fourth of july not the third or the second

That certainly would be more convenient. But no. If you want to celebrate it on the first Friday, be my guest. But I don't think we should change it. That would be insulting to this country.
