Being a native of SF and having "roots" in North Beach I don't have just one favorite!
The Steps of Rome (362 Columbus) Is excellent and fun!Singing and dancing waitstaff make for a fun dining experience! I personally love their agnello alle erbe (grilled lamb chops with herb sauce) and their tagliolini al salmone. It's a great pasta dish with asparagus, smoked salmon & vodka (yes, vodka..excellent touch) in a great cream sauce
Cafe Jacqueline -(1454 Grant Avenue)is excellent also! They serve French food and are know for serving the BEST souffles in the area! These souffles aren't just for dessert, Jacqueline also makes fabulous ones for dinner also and they're large enough for 2! The French onion soup is the best I've tasted in years, as is their spinach salad.
Caffe Delucchi (at the corner of Stockton and Columbus) is another great place to dine. They're menu ranges frorm pasta to veal to chicken to seafood dishes with their grilled snapper con granchio being my favorite! Pan sauteed topped with artichoke, sundried tomatos & crab topped with an outstanding white wine, basil and butter sauce. It's served with the "risotto of the day" and nicely prepared sauteed veggies.
Capp's Corner (1600 Powell Street at Green Street) is another favorite. I was first there when I was 2 months old and that was over 50 years ago! It's a North Beach/SF institution! Family style seating and food. Very generous portions, great bread, inexpensive and the place reeks of history with everyone from Sinatra to Herb Caen being "regulars" there. Beware though, it's right around the cornor from Club Fugazi (Beach Blanket Babylon) so it can be very busy just before showtime.
This weekend is the North Beach Festival (arts & crafts..pizza toss, tons of music, cooking, celebs..and lots more! Fun times always!) It's FREE which is a bonus and located at Washington Square Park and the surrounding area.

mine is the figaro, don't know if i'm spelling it right, lol! but when i went, i had this stuffed ravoli with lobster and a second meat, and the white sauce was so rich, every time i took a bite, my head would get light!! i thought that it was the cocktail, but it was the sauce. and the ambience is perfect, it's very small and cozy, not too big. hope i was a help.
