Try runescape.com. You can play a limited version for free or play as a member for 5 dollars a month. Its an RPG as well as having an open world with thousands of other players. But be warned its addictive. I was a member for almost 2 years and I played 2 to 10 hours a day. Its also a game in progress. They keep adding more and more stuff to it every month. You will never be able to play everything they have going in that game theres just so much to do in it.

Well man, that depends on your choice of gaming needs
If you like 3d RPG's you should pick up World of warcraft.
If you are looking for some wizardry and ranging adventure. check out Diablo 2
for a first person shooter kinda guy. BattleField 2 or if you want something a bit more fast pace, anything by valve (half life 2 DM, DOD source, CS: Source.

if you mean free as in no monthyl fees then
Guild Wars, or Guild Wars Factions. you will have to download an update once in a while though.
and WoW is in no way free, and bf2 is not an rpg, god people dont want to fully read answers, they just want to get the first post

Personally, I enjoy playing Final Fantasy XI Online(FFXI). With the new Treasures of Aht Urghan expansion, I've finally been able to play as a Blue Mage and have a blast participating in "Besieged." Other games that are fun are Fly for Fun(Flyff), Guild Wars(GW's), and World of Warcraft(WoW).
