Sunburn is damaged skin due to exposure to UV rays. It must heal. Home treatment includes:
cool showers or baths
avoid creams or lotions that can hold heat inside (oil based)
drink lots of fluids
motrin or tylenol for pain
see doctor if you have blistering
stay out of the sun
if you must go out, keep sunburned areas covered
you can use OTC preps designed specifically for sunburn (to numb the pain and remove redness such as Solarcaine or aloe gel)

Believe it or not, the stuff that they use for diaper rash, Desitin. I've had real bad sunburn and it gets rid of the redness over night, better than Noxzema and you don't want to but on Noxzema when you have a sunburn, it contains menthol which will irritate you skin even more. Trust me it works, but it on before you go to sleep and your skin will feel better in the morning.
Original, not Creamy.

Only time will make it go away. But in the meantime, use lotion with aloe vera. Avoid scented lotions if you can. You can also get "cooling gel" which I think works a little bit better. But when/if it start to get itchy and peels, don't pick at it!!!! Try to wear a little bit of sunscreen next time though. Even if you don't like to (like me), get SPF10 or 20 or something. Skin cancer can be very serious, and the ozone layer is getting worse, so it doesn't provide quite as much protection as it used to. Be careful!

I disagree with the old aloe vera gel trick. It never works!
My son is always getting burned. He's a fisherman. I splash alcohol on it ... sounds like it would burn, but it's actually very refreshing. It stops the burn and draws out the redness. I follow up with witch hazel and tea tree oil.
Works like a charm, with or without the tea tree oil.
Cocoa butter is also good for avoiding the peeling.

Yeah, Aloe Vera, time, and sunblock from now on. I had a horrible sunburn last year and all the things (lotions, ice) things I put on it didn't help, I still peeled...=|...Good Luck.

Obviously aloe will help regenerate the skin and heal the burn while soothing it...but i use silver sufadiazine. You wil probably have to go to the doc for it but if your sunburn is bad that is the stuff to use. It is used in burn units in hospitals. GREAT stuff. I keep one in my kitchen at all times. But it turns purple when exposed to the sun.....

the best thing to put on sunburn is pure aloe from the plant or pure aloe gel. you could also put lotion that has aloe in it or noxzema as well. it will take a couple of days but those are the best things.

Aloe with lidocaine will help with the burning sensation. It's next to the regualr aloe, but it's usually blue. You'll just have to wait it out. Next time, use sun block beforehand!

You can't get rid of it, you have to let it heal by itself. Keep it moisturised and sooth the pain by putting an aftersun on that contains a numbing agent. Greek yoghurt also helps to sooth the pain.
