Refusal to take medication: physical side effects – Sometimes side effects result from medication that are unbearable to the recipient. Learn what possible side effects can occur from the drugs your loved one takes. Consult with the doctor to see if over-the-counter anti-nausea, anti-diarrhea, or anti-dizziness products can be taken with prescription medications. Perhaps the medication can be taken at bedtime or mealtime to reduce side effects. When administering the medication, tell your loved one how it will help them and use distraction if side effects occur.
Be sure to put yourself in his shoes so you understand what he is going through. Depression may be a symptom of his illness so make sure he tells his physician what problems he may be experiencing so they can keep him on the right track. There are also many support groups out there for care takers (you). So search the net with care takers support groups - local.
Good luck! This road will be bumpy but try to stay as positive as possible!!

My husband had a heart attack several years ago. He also did not want to take his medicine. I explained that I loved him and want to spend the rest of our lives together, but I would not sit by and watch him let himself die. So I worked out a medication plan (he has 11 separate medications that he has to take at several points throughout the day) and I monitor his intake on a daily basis. He is not happy about taking the medications, but everyday of life is a blessing no matter what you are struggling through. He needs to take care of himself if he wants to live.

He's acting like a child.
I'm a Dad. My wife and I raised three children.
Do what you would do with a child. When it's time to take the medicine take it to him and say: "here it's time to take your medicine."
No big deal. If he refuses, then you need to consider what you're willing to do. If you're willing to leave him if he doesn't take his medicine, then tell him that and do it.
Don't make this a daily struggle. Decide how far you're willing to go with this and sit down and tell him what you intend to do and if he doesn't take the medicine, then carry out what you promised.
One more thing....spell check is your friend. It will prevent people like me from thinking you are an illiterate idiot if you use it and correct all of your spelling and punctuation mistakes.
It will make you look like you're smart!

Being in the medical profession myself and going to medical school I have to say to definately take your medicine. I work in surgery and would hate to see someone so young on my operating table. Strokes or brain attacks can occur due to brain tumors as well as cancer which can cause a premature death if not properly treated.

You cant keep things like that bottled up, Its only going to worsen the issue. If he cares for you, and most importantly himself, then he needs to take the meds.....Can he or will he talk to a counsler? they cant tell anyone about the sessions, and it just might do him some good to talk to someone about it, rather than trying to keep it a total secret. stress can cause tons of medical problems that will just add to it, maby go to a counsler together. People caring for one another is what sets humans apart from the animals, He needs the attention, even if not from his family..he has to get it off his chest.

look, it's very important for him to take those meds. it's not a joke, the doc didn't just prescribe it for him to have fun, but because if he doesn't take he might even die. Tell him You will have to share this problems with family members if he desn't take the meds, be strong, insist even if the relationship is at stake. You can save a life here, and if you really love him, then this is how you can help him.

No one can make him do something he so obviously does not want to do.
Maybe the medicine has side effects that he doesn't like?
Or maybe he just plain don't wanna take his medicine!
Either way, he is 21 and can do what he wants.
Maybe you should just enjoy your time with him without bugging him about it.

Ask him: Do you want to die? If he does, then he needs to keep not taking the medicine. If he wants to live, he better take that medicine and quit making so many problems for everyone.

it is better if his family members come to know about it. pl inform them as early as possible.somebody has to be with him constanly & see that he takes his medicines properly.tell him that his family has the right to know about his health.they can show him to a specialist & can try to cure his illness.in the time of distress it is the family & friends who come to your rescue.please for heaven's sake inform his family before it is too late.
