The name the Dixie Chicks comes from their Blue Grass days around Dallas before Natalie Maines was a member. They just decided to keep the name they made popular.

And the name I beleive it has been said numerous times by them is from the Little feat song "Dixie Chicken" which was remade by Garth brooks about the time they were starting to play in Dallas in the early 1990s. Chicks being short for chickens and name given to a group of women sometimes.

Actually they took their name from a Little Feat song back in the 70's that was re-recorded by Garth Brooks in the 90's.
