First, you make the common right-winger fallacy of confusing yourselves with America. You're only part of America. Liberals and moderates are the other part. Taking shots at your leaders and their policies is not the same as taking shots at America. I don't recall it stopping anyone from impeaching Clinton, not even while we were fighting in the Balkans. It is arrogance to confuse one's party with one's country no matter what side you're on, so I am sure you did not intend it to seem like that.

It seems the basic problem is that many right-wingers assume that strength lies in all of us agreeing with them or surrendering our citizenship (or at least the rights that used to go with it). Liberals offend people like you because they understand that strength comes from diversity of viewpoints and opinions, not from uniformity. That used to be one of the good arguments for states' rights, back when you guys believed in that. Most sensible people understand that no one is right about everything all the time, so we need to ensure that ideas are tested by open, fair debate (no name-calling). If your ideas can't stand to take a few shots, maybe your ideas aren't so good and we should be following someone else. If you have confidence in your ideas, you should have no problem with people taking shots at them. (Similarly, if your ideas keep crashing into the Constitution, maybe the answer isn't amending the Constitution -- maybe it's changing your minds.) Only ideas that can withstand criticism are ideas that can persuade others, and persuasion is the only weapon properly wielded against one's own countrymen.

As for sinking the ship, I would not worry too much. Remember that liberals by definition love their liberty and have always been willing to fight for it when necessary (not just desirable, like you guys). The only time we ever had a civil war, it was basically southern conservatives who started it, fired the first shots, keep flying the flag, etc., so the real risk to the republic is your side, not the liberals. Liberals don't shoot judges -- or doctors. Liberals didn't bomb the Olympics. Again, consider how often right-wing ideas these days seem to call for changing the Constitution. That is why I will not flatter today's right-wing with the name of conservative, as they have apparently passed over into radicalism. Yet you worry over America being sunk by a party that controls no part of the government!

No, we don't want to see the ship sink. We are trying to plug the holes. Seems the other way around, let's run the Titanic through as many ice bergs as we can. It's unsinkable. We're fully capable of fighting three wars at the same time, right?

You are so right. Liberals act like the U.S. is some inexhaustible machine that will never break down under the stress, like a bank account that has endless funds.

I wish I had penned your analogy. It is better than mine.

Consider the ACLU. They act as if society can still function when every single little whiny complaint can be disputed in a court. They don't have the sense to realize that if everything a normal society should be able to take for granted is endlessly questioned and challenged, society will fall apart.

This ship was scuttled in 2000 when Bush stole the election, it has sunk a little more each year and really took a dive in 2004 I think the only way to plug the hole is to stick Bush into it. Impeachment for his crimes, and then a trial in the Hague for his crimes against humanity. That will keep the ship floating until repairs can be made.

They will never openly run on what they truly believe, because they will lose at the polls.... every time.

They recently announced their 'new direction'...
*Lower student loans
*Higher minimum wage
*More perscription drug coverage/healthcare
*etc,etc,etc.....
*No mention of the War in Iraq
*No mention of the Immigration issue

In other words the same 'Ol schtick they've relied on for the last 40+ years......

@ Answerman: like the Democrats, you have no real answers, just the same tired rhetoric... Utter Failure...

@ g: FYI the defict was cut in half this year, three years ahead of schedule, due to the current level of tax cuts, which increased revenues 13% more than projected... Fail (again)

Well, yeah. That's what the Founders intended. Light is the best disinfectant. All criticism is allowed and makes the nation stronger. Never, ever, fear ideas or contrary opinions. Nations that try to suppress dissent cower next to the USA.

Stop worrying about liberals "taking shots".

Worry about that iceberg George Bush is steering us toward.

... do the conservatives?

have you seen the debt? why are we not going after bin Laden? Why are we even in Iraq?

it seems conservatives have no idea how to answer these questions and no concern for responsiblity of any kind?

The liberals think that you should be neutered. And I agree. They also believe in Euthanasia.
