The first inhabitants were the Archaic indians which are believed migrated from central america or the Florida area through Cuba, Dominican Republic and then Puerto Rico. These were very early communities ranging from 30 to 40 individuals each. They did not manufactured any pottery or agriculture. Their reamins can be found in some sites in Cabo Rojo, Vieques, Salinas and Barceloneta.
The second migration to the caribbean occurred from the coasts of venezuela through the lesser antilles to Vieques, Puerto Rico and east of Dominican Republic. These culture were excellent pottery makers and know agriculture. They are called saladoid indians or "igneri". Their distinction is its beautiful clay pottery sometimes artistically painted using white and red colors. Typical saladoid sites in Puerto Rico are found in Vieques, Loiza, Ponce, Coamo and Guayanilla.
There is debate about a third migration or wether the igneri developed into the Ostiones culture. Ostiones culture can be diferentiated from saladoid through its pottery. Ostionod people abandoned the used of white paint and only painted in red. However they tend to use more incision and applications in the pottery. Typical ostionan sites are located in Cabo Rojo.
Ostionan groups developed in what we called the Tainos. A culture that fluorished a hundred years before the arrival of Columbus.

By the time of colonization, the island was inhabited by the TaÃno indians. The Caribs were inhabitants of the Lesser Antilles, and not Puerto Rico. They went and fought with the TaÃnos once in a while, but never established in the island.
