It is ridiculous. I just figured out that I spent over 4 thousand dollars last year on gifts...From birthdays, fathers day, graduation, valentines...and on and on. Just think how retailers rely so much on these halmark holidays....Unbelievable

Gifts are always optional. You are not required to spend money on anything if you don't wish to do so. With that said, I rarely spend more than $30 on any one individual with the exception of my sole surviving parent and my spouse. I prefer to give gifts (and cards) which are handmade (knitted sweaters, scarves etc.) which shows I cared enough about someone to actually spend time to bring it to fruition. But if you don't have the time, there's always Hallmark.

All this gifting crap is the fault of women. My wife drives me absolutley nuts with the amount of money she spends on gifts for people I have never even heard of. I would never, nor can I afford, to spend $300.00 on an overnight stay at a bed and breakfast. She just gave away that deal to a woman who "helped" her coach her high school golf team. Guess what the golf team gave her? The team's parents are country club members and wealthy members of our community. They gave her a car wash!! They should have washed the car, they were the ones who trashed it. Gifts are a woman thing.

That four thousand dollars you spent goes to better the united states economy. If everyone didn't buy a gift for mothers day, bam, depression.

I'm only 13 so I don't buy many gifts but I agree it's ridiculous. However I really don't mind getting expensive gifts for Christmas and so forth...

That's crazy, just remember it's not the price of the gift... but it's the thought that counts!

Yes, it is. Try to have a smaller budget for each. It's the thought that counts.

Sounds like marketing works.

Do you mind adding me to your gift list?

For personal gratification. To make us feel better for neglecting those we love. The more neglect, the more $$$, check your receipts!

Perhaps you're just buying too expensive gifts.
