Well, America's nickname is the melting pot. This means that we DO accommodate everybody. How would you feel if you moved here knowing nothing, and couldn't even buy products or find your way around? The population of Spanish speakers is growing in America and we need to accommodate them. I agree that they should try to learn English, and living in America is the best way to start, immersion. But they have to be given an opportunity to learn, and they need the help from signs, etc. I agree that changing the American language is ridiculous though.

Every immigrant in the 19th and 2oth century decided since they moved to America that they would learn English.
What makes those who break the law better than those who followed the rules then decided to learn English to improve their lot in life? Nothing makes them special other then they act like they are owed something that they are not. Now I'm willing to teach legal immigrants English (I would be better teaching history so they could pass the citizenship test). Those that have broken LAWS to come here don't deserve any treatment, shoot they have no legal standing, thus no constitutional protection. One of the reasons I don't get why those who want illegal immigration push it so hard, but that's another story.
For society to exist it needs something to hold it together. Language is one of the things that unites us. This is not to say that they can't speak another language at home, but it's wrong to expect those of us who don't speak another language to bend to a minority. The only other language that I would concede that might be necessary knowing would be sign language.

I agree with you, this is America...speak ENGLISH! My parents came here from Thailand. My dad took classes at the University there to learn english before he came to the US. When they got here, my mom took classes at the adult school to learn english. Have you ever seen the Thai alphabet?? We have a completely different set of characters. At least with spanish, english words and letters are recognizable. My point is, come on, if you want to come to America so bad, at least learn the language.
By the way, I speak Spanish, but I'm tired of seeing billboards, directions, instructions, manuals and anything else that has Spanish right under the English.

No, spanish americans should assimulate. That doesnt mean we change for them, they change for us. If someday I decide to move to a spanish speaking country i will not expect them all to learn english on my behalf. In that case I would learn spanish, and I would abide by their laws. I would not sneak into mexico, or any other country illegally. I would go there legally and join into their society. That is what most americans expect in return. Why our government does not is the mystery. Afterall , they are supposed to represent us, but they seem to represent themselves in this case. Perhaps we need a new government? I think its time.

Thats not all! A whole lot of our teachers have to take 300 hours of ESL (English as a Second Language) training at our expense. Because there are so many illegals in our schools, in our welfare system. Our expense because we pay the teachers with our taxes. Just plain unbelievable. Thank you U.S. Congress. Everyone get out this fall and vote this administration out before its too late.

I see your point. I particularly do not mind that English is translated in Spanish or any other language for that matter as long as English stays the primary language, then I'm cool.

I agree with you 100%. What other languages do we have to accommodate next, Chinese, Armenian...?
The only way one would assimilate into America is to learn to speak English.

"Newsflash for you. maximum white individuals are both English or French by ability of descent." Um, information flash for You: maximum white individuals are of German descent, then Irish. although, america is an English speaking usa. it continuously has been, and continuously will be. The illegals can save attempting to modify our usa, even though it ain't gonna ensue!
