The Mauritius Dodo (Raphus cucullatus, called Didus ineptus by Linnaeus), more commonly just Dodo, was a metre-high flightless bird of the island of Mauritius. The Dodo, which is now extinct, lived on fruit and nested on the ground.

Once upon a time there were dodo birds. But they were slow and easy to hunt and many humans killed the bird driving it to extinction. Long live the DODO.

Not anymore. They were big, dumb, clumsy, flightless, and on to make it worse, were not afraid of humans. They became an easy and abundant food source for explorers and colonist in the faraway islands they lived in, and thus became extinct. Hence, the saying "it went the way of the dodo bird" when referring to something that has ceased to exist.
