Its not that the secret service is a secret organization that we are not supposed to know about, it is called the secret service because they try to keep most of the measures of the presidents and other washington officails' security measures secret, as well as where thy are going to be while en-route to places and other assorted security measures.

we don't know whats so secret about the secret service it's to secretive...but they don't want you to know about their connections with the Colombian cocaine lords(j/k)

It's because of the secrecy of the nature of their work. In order for them to effectively carry out their assignments no one can know the detail of their jobs.

They get info from FBI, CIA, NSA, etc and only report to the President. They may even have their own sources.
