Bison and buffalo are NOT the same animal. Only Americans have managed to confuse the two.

Buffalo are Asian and African creatures. The most familiar are water buffallo but there are several other species. Buffalo are in no way extinct.

Bison are European animals that migrated into North America at the same time as humans. Bison today are found in North America and Eastern Europe. Bison are also in no way extinct.

At the time the first humans arrived in North America there were also several other species of animals closely related to bison. These animals are now extinct so only the European bison remains.

We never had buffalo in the U.S. only bison. Buffalo are what we call water buffalo, and they're still around, just not here.
