Yes,they are actually insectivores.They live in moist ares that have good hiding spots.They hunt for food under leaves,moss,rotten wood,as well as things left behind by man such as tin and old boards. Some of the food items are Slugs,worms,pupae of several insects,spiders,snails and pretty much anything found under their hiding spots.They can usually be found near water.

newts can eat flies and earthworms. I had one for almost 8 years and that is what I fed him. I also got some frozen brine shrimp for him a few times and he seemed to enjoy those
