Most of it is cut straight from the cut and then send to cure in a lumber yard. That is just one reason they have such a ban on cutting down trees.

is the wood cut this season? if so was it fresh cut? well the best way to find out is with a moisture meter it should be around 6% on the meter and still before installing it it should sit 3 days in the home to adjust to the home's climate...if you can not get a meter to test it another way is to lay a plastic bag on one end and when it does not collect moisture in the bag it is close...

You will want a moisture content of 8 to 12 percent...But how to get that content depends on where you live, the type of wood, how the wood is stored, if you have access to a kiln...Too many variables to answer. Please provide more details.
