It's hiatal hernia, although some refer to it as hiatus hernia. Surgery is usually unneccessary unless your symptoms worsen instead of getting better.
Just follow the instructions (I hope) you were given: If you're overweight, lose weight. Take an OTC antacid according to the directions or per your doctor's instructions. Eat 6 small meals throughout the day to keep your stomach from getting full. Eat slowly and don't lie down for 2-3 hrs after eating. Don't eat or drink 1-2 hrs. before bed. No alcohol, caffeine, fatty foods, citrus or anything else that increases heartburn. In bed, keep your head elevated above your stomach. You can use pillows or place 6" blocks under the head of your bed. Avoid bending over, especially after you eat. Avoid straining during bowel movements, urination, lifting. Don't wear tight clothing around your chest or stomach. Don't smoke.
Notify your doctor right away if your symptoms get worse instead of better or if you run a fever. Have someone drive you to an ER/ED if you vomit repeatedly or vomit blood, or if you have chest pain with nausea, sweating or shortness of breath.

It's a Hiatel Hernia, I've had one my entire life, I'm 46 and there is no recovery other than surgery, The one thing that has helped me, is a drug called Nexium. You need to talk to your Doc, I waited too long and now I have a disease called Barretts Esophagus, I'm 90% more likely to get cancer., it is from the acid coming up from the flap in your stomach that don't work correctly(Hiatel Hernia)Don't let it get that far!! Ask you Doc, Good Luck

I have lived with a hiatal hernia for most of my life. I am a retired Chiropractor. I saw MY Chiropractor yesterday for treatment because my hernia had flared up again. Within minutes I felt a whole lot better. Even slept last night without the pain that kept me awake the night before. Find a good Chiropractor that deals with Hiatal Hernias. Good luck.

My Mother suffered for many years with this condition. Not only was it extremely painful, but embarassing as well as she had uncontrolled belching. Surgery was ruled out by her doctor because of the risk of it reappearing. Then my brother ended up with the same condition...belching and all. Rather than take medication and Tums, Rolaids, etc...he opted to treat it from the inside with a product that is an adaptogen which goes to work on all auto-immune deficiencies. Being it had medical validation he thought he would give it a try. He has now found total relief of all of his symptoms, doesn't need to use antacids any more.

Can't help you too much on that. I had an inguinal hernia repaired. Went in the the morning, walked out in the afternoon. No sweat.
