The World Cup is the largest sporting event besides the Olympics, where 32 nations compete in the game of football (soccer according to Americans) in order to determine the world cup champion.

FIFA World cup
There is in an international body governing this sport, so it's safe to say that soccer is the exactly same sport in every part of the world, and it is call football instead of soccer,
The international governing body is referred to as FIFA, from the French "Federation Internationale de Football Associatif" (International Federation of Associative Football). The FIFA defines a soccer calendar and the culmination of it is the World Cup which is held every 4 years at alternating locations. Only the best countries of each continent will go to compete, in total there are 32 countries.

The 32 countries are divided in 8 groups, with 4 team in each group.
First Phase :
The system of play will be the league system, each team playing one match against each of the other teams in the same group, with three points for a win, one point for a draw and none for a defeat.
Each team plays agains the other teams of his group.(Total 3 games per team)
The winner and runner-up of the group avance to the next phase.

Second Phase (group of 16):
From this phase on it's one on one. Will all be played in accordance with the knock-out system
The winner of the game avance to the next phase

Then the next phases are quaterfinals, semifinals and final. In total, the teams that get to the final plays 7 games.

For the 2006 world cup the 32 countries are:
Group 1: Germany, Poland, Ecuado and Costa Rica
Group 2: England, Paraguay, Trinidad and Tobago, and Sweden
Group 3: Argentina, Côte d'Ivoire, Serbia and Montenegro, and Netherlands
Group 4: Mexico, Iran, Angola and Portugal
Group 5: Italy, Ghana , USAand Czech Republic
Group 6: Brazil, Croatia, Australia and Japan
Group 7: France, Switzerland, Korea Republic and Togo
Group 8: Spain, Ukraine, Tunisia and Saudi Arabia

The World Cup is similar to the Super Bowl. Yet, it only comes every 4 years and countries from all over the World play in it, hence the name World Cup. If you are american then u can compare to the WORLD SERIES, except the WORLD CUP starts with 215 nations, and through some steps, only 32 go to the official world cup games. and unlike the world series the WORLD CUP is international and very competitive and emotional and exiting.
