This happened shortly after I logged into my Yahoo email today. It says "the security certif is from a trusted certifying authority. THe security certif date is valid. But, the name on the security certif is invalid or does not match the name of the site. Then, I looked into the Certificate tab and it says: Issued to a248.e.akamai.net. Issued by GTECyberTrustGlobal Root. Valid 1/25/06 to 1/25/07. I have no idea what this means.

It's interesting that some of the Yahoo folks are advising that you shouldn't worry about this error. This may well be the case in this instance. However, the whole purpose of the certificate is to give the user confidence that the site is genuine and not, for example, a phishing site. By guarenteeing that the site URL matches the URL in the certificate you know you're in the right place.

If you ever get this error you should not trust the site until a reasonable explanation can be obtained for why the site URL doesn't match the Certificate. That's the whole point of having a certificate and the whole point of getting a warning like the one you saw.

So! Beware!!!

This would be a server misconfiguration. A secure certificate is used to encrypt data that is sent between your computer and a web server. Each certificate is bought and configured for a specific server name. You can use a certificate on a different server, but if the certificate's name doesn't match the server's name, you get this warning.

Nothing to worry about in this case (I happen to work for Yahoo!, and I can tell you that Akamai.net is one of our partners), but I will forward your issue onto the proper people at Yahoo! and make sure someone looks into it.

Many Yahoo users are experiencing the same or similar alerts. Yahoo is still trying to get their new home page, beta mail and photomail to "play nice" together. Until they can get their heads out of their collective posteriors, we users will suffer the consequences of poorly performing Yahoo programs. Chin up..... last time Yahoo did an extensive overhaul it only took several months to get the bugs out.
