Positively Fungo circles. This is where the coach stands when he hits ball to the infield and outfield during the pregame.

they are the on deck circle, i just went to a Cubs game last night I go about 15 times a year and looked at the pics i have and all i see are the on deck with the teams logos on the rubber mat used

they used to be on deck circles and are now maintained out of tradition. clubs now use a mat made composite rubber - this way a depression in the ground is not created out of repeated use.
