Absolutely not. The fetus is lined in a shock absorbing sac of amniotic fluid. Your wife's rib cage is another story. Your wife should go to her doctor to get looked at - both albuterol and many antibiotics are safe during pregnancy. The pain could be as simple as a muscle spasm from coughing or possibly pneumonia - easily treatable.

I;m not sure but when I was pregnant with my second child, I had a bad cold and was coughing a lot and I also got some of those pains, I think if its very persistent see a doctor but I think its kinda like cramps from everything tightening in your belly when you cough. It might cause some stress for the baby. But the baby is protected very well in the womb. If she is in too much pain it never hurts to take a trip to the hospital and don't worry the nurses wont think your crazy, then you will know for sure. Better safe then sorry. Hope she feels better soon!

It's the muscles that probably hurt most when you wife coughs - the weight of the baby puts stain on the muscles. she should see a doctor about the cough, and drink more warm fluids to try and relieve the cough. when there's something in your mouth, you tend not to cough alot, so she could try sucking on lollies. I would think that alot of coughing might move the baby around alot, but at 5 months the baby is quite well developed, so i don;t think it could hurt the baby alot physically. It might hurt your wife less if she leans forward and holds her belly when she coughs, for extra support. she needs to see a doctor though. i'm sure you can take antibiotics if your sick when you are pregnant in the 2nd and 3rd trimester. best wishes for you both and your baby.

I don't think that coughing will hurt the baby. But if she's sick she should see a doctor.
When my cousin was pregnant she got the flu and had a bad cough with it. She coughed so much that she cracked a rib. (somehow because of the pregnancy)

If I get a cold while I'm pregnant my cough lasts thru the rest of the pregnancy. This is my third child and this time the doctor prescribed me an inhaler. I told him I could rough it out but he said it's perfectly safe and he was more worried about the lack of oxygen when I have a coughing fit.
Congratulations and good luck

no it won't hurt the baby, it just either wakes the baby up or moves it around a lil. i had a really bad cough in the beginning of my pregnancy with really bad coughing fits aswell, i think the pain she is talking about is maybe ligament streeching when you cough or get up fast or sneeze it kinda triggas it off. just talk to the obgyn and ask for maybe some cough medicine
