Your period is when you shed the lining that your uterus had to get ready for the fertilized egg to implant to. Since you didn't get pregnant, the lining is no longer needed. When it begins to shed the lining at the beginning it is fresh blood which is more red. This starts to turn to brown since it is old blood at the end of your period. The older brown blood usually has a foul odor also. This is perfectly normal.
