Most of the above answers are great. However I agree with Janis Joplin being the greatest. Tied for second is maybe Chryssie Hynde of the Pretenders, Nancy Wilson of Heart, and Pat Benatar.

Joan Jett, and perhaps the longest if you go back to the 1970s and her band the Runaways. She lived a rock and roll life that would break half the female rockers in half.
