When I see those ship containers stacked one on top of each other on a cargo ship, I wonder what would happen in a bad storm....there is now way they would fall off, stacked so high?

I know they are very very heavy, but i just dont see how they could not get knocked around.

INcredible.. The first question I've seen where everyone is right.
Yes, they are connected to the ship through strapping and bolts at the corners..
They do fall off. but very rarely and some are neutral buoyancy and the cause of many small ships foundering.. Usually, whale attacks get the blame.

Yeah, I've heard tales of shipping containers, and many have neutral buoyancy, so they float with the top just touching the surface, being lost overboard and causing a shipping hazard.

They are tied down well, but I have heard that they still fall off often enough to actually be a significant hazard to navigation. I don't have a source though, I just heard that somewhere.

They are locked together at the corners. They fall off anyway in storms.
