I have lived in Oregon, California, Washington, Nebraska and now Tennessee.

The friendliest people are in the south. They are pretty conservative as a whole, but they welcome opposing points of view. They will debate you on any views they don't agre with and do not concede their point easily. That is actually one of my favorite things about southerners.

I am originally from California and I will never go back. California, Oregon, and Washington are all very liberal states, but people are always in a hurry and are not friendly. In fact if you don't fall in with the politically correct line they will crucify you (metephorically speaking of course).

Nebraska is conservative and friendly, but not very welcoming of outsiders.

Liberal is one of the opposites of friendly.
Eastern states are mostly liberal.
The Midwest is where the friendly, welcoming ppl live.

Just about anywhere is friendly and welcoming. Look for lots of local ordinances and rules to find the Liberal outposts.

Austin, TX and Portland, OR are two of the most liberal cities in the US. They are filled with friendly people, too. Plus they are much less expensive than San Francisco or NYC.

Massachusetts...particularly the Boston area is very well known for being a very liberal area. The state is overwhelmingly Democratic and is full of open-minded environmental activists, gay and lesbian supporters, and enlightened students. John Kerry is from Massachusetts (if that means anything)
