Split them into two sections and have one section write their name on a piece of paper. Have the 2nd section pick a name out of a hat. Tell each team of two that each one needs to write three paragraphs about what their team mate did over the break. They'll get to know one another better that way, and still start in on school work without knowing it.

Anything fun. Games oriented around trust and learning names. Or duck-duck goose, but instead of saying "Goose" they gotta say the kid's name. Give the kids a list of things like "Find one person with a dog" and get them to sign the paper. This'll help them get to know each other a bit better.
The first day is your best chance to get a good sense of comradery amongst the students and admiration towards the teacher. It'll go a long way.

Have them write two fibs and one fact about themself. They should make all of them sound believable (or outlandish if the fact is outlandish). Each student shares their two fibs and fact aloud in any order. The class tries to determine which statement is the fact. It is a wonderful activity to get to know each other (classbuilding) and fun, too! The teacher should do her two fibs and a fact as an example to start off. It might sound like this:
"I have eaten ten apples in one sitting."
"I have had a raccoon as a pet."
"I have ridden a bike up a ramp."
"Which one is fact?" (get opinions by show of hands...then announce the fact)
It can get pretty entertaining.
