Theres a book called glass castle a memoir and is very different. This little girl has a weird life style. Then there is "cut" the book about a girl who cuts herself. The last book is super gross " I hate sharp objects........It still helps you understand why the hell people do that.

There are two books by the same author, named Jonathan Saffron Foer, that are kind of biographical. The first book, called "Everything is Illuminated" is actually a book in which the main character is actually the author, but I would recommend his second book, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" which is a book about a boy living in New York City whose dad dies in 9/11. This book is a little heavy, but extremely funny and very candid, as it is narrated by an 11 year old boy.

I'm glad to see that you like to read books about women who have survived challenges. You might also enjoy reading _Left to Tell_ by Imaculee Ilibigaza, who survived the genocide in Rwanda, or _Night_ by Elie Weisel, which is probably the most honest published account of the Shoah.

My 14 year old daughter and I read the same books so we can discuss them while we read. We just finished The Kite Runner and we both loved it.. she thinks it's one of her all-time favorite books. It's about 2 boys (one rich and one poor) who are best friends growing up in Afganistan during the war with Russia and the rise of the Taliban.
