Why does the U.S. get blamed for slavery and taking the Native Americans land when . . .?

. . . those things were done by European nations long before the United States even existed. It was the United States that abolished slavery and gave the Native Americans tax-free casinos to help their own economies. They should get the blame and the U.S. should get a little credit for trying to fix their mistakes.

Here we go again... People please, how can the U.S. be blamed for anything prior to 1776? It didn't exist!

kcracer1 - you need to read the history books before you go telling other people to.

normobrian - the West was already conqured before 1776 by Europeans (mostly Spain). Ever hear of the Conquistators? They weren't from the U.S. How can you blame the U.S. for their massacres?

THEY should get the blame? Hello-it was the EUROPEANS who came to the western land and brought slaves with them to work the land in this "new world". The United States only abolished slavery after many years of bloodshed and pressure from the citizens...but they didn't welcome these former slaves with open arms... These men and women had to go through many more years of hell to get equal rights....

And the Native Americans should feel lucky for the Casinos? Are you kidding me????? The Europeans raped their lands, their families, forced them to assimilate to "christian" culture....and they should be grateful??? To this day, the federal government is screwing the Native Americans....

We are decendants of slaves, Native Americans forced out of their lands, Hispanics, and yes...those Europeans you are talking about. It's not like those who created the US officially are a totally different type of people who went around "fixing" everything.

Those that need to be blamed are long since dead.... but we can learn from their mistakes...and make sure we know the real history of what really happened....

EUROPEAN America went no further West than the Appalachians when we won independence. Everything that happened after that is AMERICAN history. Like killing off the buffalo to starve the Indians, the Trail of Tears, reservations, broken treaties too numerous to count, westward expansion, etc. BTW, Indians don't have economies, they are Americans. Their economy is our economy.

The U.S. didn't abolish slavery until 70 years after its inception, and then, only as a punitive measure against the rebellious South. Lincoln, himself, said that if the Civil War could have been avoided at the price of keeping slavery, he would have kept it.

Now do you understand why America gets blamed for what it has done?

because long after Europe abolished slavery , the united states did not want to get rid of slaves. The south wanted slaves and the North did not. So NO Americans should not be getting no credit for something that the wanted to keep. or why do you think that Martin Luther king die for? or why did blacks boycott so many thing in the 1960's for 365 days.. America has a very dark past and present w/ Iraq/ No credit is due!

It was indeed the settlers who helped wipe out the natives, but america was well into its existence when union and confederate armies were steadily wiping them out and taking their land for military and economical structure. What did america do for the natives? give them tax free casinos? And a few miles of land per tribe that survived the massacre? This country was once the natives land, and it was taken, never to be returned. a whole culture of people destroyed so this land of the "free" could exist. Ironic that this great nation of freedom and coexistence was built right on top of the graves of the people who used to own it. Just another testiment to the great hypocracy and lie that is this country.

Haiti was the first to ban slavery around 1803
England abolished slavery in 1834.
The 11th amendment was enacted in 1865 by Abraham Lincoln.

If African-Americans and native americans had not complained and fought back, do you actually believe white americans would of given freedom to slaves and indians tax free casinos?! No!

we made it an art form. lets see, when pilgrims got here, the indian brave hunted and fished while the indian woman did the work. and we have improved this how? bottom line, we took their land and their lives so we could live where they were living. also remember that we tried to use indians as slaves, before using Africans, amongst others. i think we should accept some culpability for the plight of these groups.

I agree completely!!....i have a lot of "Native Americans" around my social life....and they say that they deserve the "Reservations" because we are the ones that took there land....but how many countrys are there that have conquered land and given them back so much?.....and then some of them say that we're cruel for taking their homeland away from them....Omgosh I dont get it...I think that we were very merciful to them and we gave them more than we should have.....if anything i think we should get more benifits.....but thats just my opinion....

Actually it started in africa the brothers did it to the brothers they just have a sore spot and are taught that the US is bad by their parents but they cannot accept that it was their fault it happened
