The snakes belly was white with black spots.. Does anyone have an idea what breed of snake it is? I am familiar with corn, garden, black, black racer, copperhead, cotten mouth, diamond back rattlers and coral snakes. I know some others not native to North America, but not a lot of them. Got any ideas? I am already checking out a site I learned about; this is the site if anyone else would like to use it. www.southalley.com/snakes.html . Hope this will help others.

There is a creek down the street from where the snake was found and it is in central North Carolina, about 50 miles from Virginia.

Without knowing where you are it's hard to say what it might be. It sounds a little like a Speckled Kingsnake. Look here to check out some info. http://www.kingsnake.com/king/getula/holbrooki.html

What would help is the state and location (near water, etc.)

black rat snake (Elaphe obsoleta obsoleta)
Description: A large shiny black snake with a white chin and throat. Juveniles have dark blotches on a gray background; traces of this pattern are often visible in adult specimens. This is Michigan's largest snake.
Adult Length: 3.5 to 8 feet.

Well if we knew where it came from then we could probably say what it is. but like what someone else said. You may not be looking at a snake at all. Most likely a "glass snake"

If you live in florida what you are probably seeing isn't a snake at all, although it may look like one.
what you are probably seeing is an eastern glass lizard.
They can also be found in alabama, georgia and south carolina

They are often called a glass snake.

Soudns like a black rat snake to me. Where do you live? Where did you catch it? If it doesnt try to bite, i would definitely guess it is a black rat.

one day, my dad brought a live snapping turtle home in the back of our 89 mustang. The turtle was the size 1foot wide by about one foot long. We soon took it to a nearby river and put it in. it swam under the rocks. it looked cool.
