The major cause of homophobia is not having had association within the gay community, second, not having any knowledge of the life and how hard it is for a couple to live together because of all the misconception of being gay. Third, getting past all the myths and misconception about gays and their life style being gay is not about being a sex fiend or wanting everyone of that sex. Gay is loving, caring, showing compassion, and giving 100%of themselves. Just like a heterosexual person or couple will do for someone they love very much.

First and foremost, no matter what people may say to justify their homophobia, their reasons come after the fact. The homophobia comes first.

HATE AS SUPERIORITY: Some people have a need to hate in order to cover their low self-esteem. So, they identify a social minority as the source of their problems. It happened in early 20th century America with the Irish, the Italians, and Eastern European immigrants. There was strong Anti-Semitc feeling in the US leading up to World War II, but they were victimized overseas and Japanese and Germans became the target. Then Communists. Certainly there was racism against African Americans before the civil rights movement of the 1960s, but it ratcheted up in new ways with a resurgence of the Klan. Women leaving the home for the commercial workplace, Latinos (Chicanos then), and in the 1970s, Gays emerged as an identifiable social group.

As each group has attained social footing, they have had to face attacks, usually from the people stereotypically associated with the power structure: white males. It'as thought thee was a competition for supremacy.

FEAR: which takes many forms. Fear of their own sexuality, perhaps; a study at the University of Georgia suggested that homophobic men experienced more arousal at images of gay porn than non-homophobic men. But there is also a fear of losing social position, of being marginalized by the same society that they have used to marginalize others. Fear of "becoming" homosexual themselves, or being sexually attacked by homosexuals. (In reality, most male/male rape occurs strictly between heterosexuals.)

CULTURAL/HETEROSEXISM: The best way I can think of describing this is a line in the movie "Parting Glances" when one of the characters says, "Have you ever noticed how straight people are so narcissistic that 99% of everything you see is about them?" The culture of the world is so pervasively set up by and about heterosexuals that they often fail to notice homomphobia. These kinds of social norms teach us that heterosexuality is "better" than homosexuality, and people are presumed straight until someone knows otherwise.

The three main causes of Homophobia are:
1. Fundamentalist Protestant Christians.
2. Conservative Roman Catholics.
3. Politicians either Republican or Democrat that use the previous religious beliefs to bolster their own political agenda ie: George Bush and Hillary Clinton!

The effects of these three are: violence against the GLBT community either physical (death/beatings) and social (no marriage/adoption).

I write this as a Socialist Christian who supports full GLBT rights.
Vote Socialist!

i imagine that faith does play its area, for sure. it really is seen a sin (really by ability of staunch fundamentalists) and for this reason distinctive homophobia arises from faith. although, I come from what's seen between the most faith-a lot less (if the form of be conscious exists) cities in the united kingdom, and that i have nevertheless considered distinctive homophobia in my time. i imagine there are different aspects at play thoroughly break free relion: a million) concern of the unknown. i understand that's quite a cliche, even though it really is real. If human beings have not been used to being round gay human beings or don't understand a lot about homosexuality, it will be considered as some thing weird and wonderful that they are quick to positioned down 2) protection of their personal sexuality. This, in my view, is an quite male trait. I.e. "i do not choose actually everyone wondering i'm gay, so i'd be a d*ck to all people who's gay". 3) lack of preparation. This ties in with my first element, too. it really is confusing for individuals to appreciate sexuality. For us (gay human beings) that's straight forward to settle for heterosexuality because it really is the classic/norm/majority/toddler-generating orientation. yet in my heart of hearts, as a lesbian, i will nevertheless never relate to why a lady would elect a guy over a lady! instantly human beings do not could settle for homosexuality in the way that gay human beings settle for heterosexuality, so in the adventure that they don't relate to it both that creates a divide. Sexuality is an quite gray area. a minimum of racists can see that truly everyone appears born with that ethnicity, sexists see that truly everyone appears born with that gender etc. Sexuality is better speculative, so that's straight forward for homophobes to easily imagine we are a collection of weirdos and shun any idea that it would merely be inherent to who we are. So, to respond to the question, i imagine faith has a competent position yet is by ability of no ability the in reality source of homophobia. distinctive the homophobes i have ever encountered don't have any interest in faith in any respect, yet it really is because there isn't any longer a lot faith the position i'm from.

Before I answer your question let me examine the question itself.

What is homophobia?:

homophobia - Prejudice against (fear or dislike of) homosexual people or homosexuality

So homophobia is alot of things. It can be

fear of homosexuals
hate of homosexuals
fear of homosexuality
hate of homosexuality

The first three definitions I could care less to elaborate on. But I do want to talk about the very last one, hate of homosexuality.

Why do people hate homosexuality? I have one answer for ya.

Morality

It is the same reason we hate:

Urophilia, Telephone Scatologia, Sexual Sadism, Sexual Masochism, Necrophilia, Klismaphilia, Coprophilia, Frotteurism, Bestiality, Pedophilia and all other sexual deformities.

What is not healthy and natural is destructive.

People are afraid of things that they don't understand. Because, regardless of their personal sexual practices, people are taught that anything other than intercourse in the missionary position is dirty and wrong and they feel ashamed about their own behaviors in the bedroom and therefore look for people to pass judgement on and consider lesser than themselves so they can say, "well at least I'm not that perverted." This my opinion but try this link for further clarification.

Often times, the things we hate are the things that we see in ourselves. I'm not suggesting that every single homophobic person is secretly gay, but I do know that sexuality is fluid. Sometimes people, regardless of their sexual orientation, are attracted sexually to someone they think they shouldn't be interested in. I suspect that some of the hate that people project at gays has to do with self-hatred -- not being 100% confident of one's own masculinity or sexuality because it's not absolute.

Fear, primarily of things that are not understood, but also of self (see study linked below in sources -- read through the whole thing).
Religions, primarily conservative ones -- liberal ones have the opposite effects.
Socialization, another words, upbringing. If you were brought up to hate, most people hate -- and if its themselves, they hate themselves, or they commit suicide.

Good luck with the paper.

We are genetically programmed to be frightened of things that are different because we may not know how they function and therefore we may not be able to judge if they will hurt us or not. Take an exotic bird...a parrot, say, and release it into the wild. The sparrows and blackbrids will kill it..not because it threatens them in any way... but because it is different.

I think plenty of people who are homophobic are ignorant, also because they are jealous. and also because they hate themselves for not being honest with their own feelings about their sexuality. I think a lot of men who are blantantly homophobic are closet homosexuals but have been taught to hate the same people that they are or who have become
