The 808 refers to the Roland TR-808, a now obsolete electronic drum machine. Roland made the 808 (later model was the 909, I believe) which was used in some electronic music of the early 80's but never caught on there, as it clearly didn't provide the fidelity of sampled drums.

However, with the advent of rap, hip-hop and similar genre, the 808 sound was embraced by seminal acts like RUN-DMC, Kurtis Blow, Sugar Hill Gang, et. al.

The 808 is now revered in urban music, and software emulations and samples abound in the industry as a way to get that sonic signature without having to locate a used one on eBay.

i think it's an expression for a "turn around"...or like saying im back and im hot like an expression. Remember that song 808 by that group Black...lyrics went something like :boom like a 808
