Contact an attorney to petition the court to have the charge expunged. But beware, in some states that charge will still show up on a background check as 'expunged'. If you were a minor it will be easier to get the charge expunged.

you have to be a good person for a long time! According to Massachusetts law, you have to wait ten years after any misdemeanor convictions and 15 years after any felony convictions in order to have past charges or convictions sealed or expunged. The sad truth of it is, even if you were charge with a crime, and were later to be found not guilty, This charge cannot be immedietly expunged. This is because certain civil liberties organizations feel it is neccessary to maintain a clear record of the sort of folks who get either convicted or exonerated or criminal charges. The downside of this is that when potential employers do a background check, un-expunged charges will appear. The upside is that the full court disposition is there to see for the trained eye.

It depends on the laws in your state. If this is a misdemeanor offense and you were on probation, then usually it can be expunged after you're off probation for a specified length of time with no additional criminal charges. for example.. once you successfully complete probation, wait 3 years, or 5 years (depending on the state law) then submit a request to the Court to expunge the offense from your record.

Be advised, this does not prevent the Federal or State DOJ from seeing your complete record... so any federal or law enforcement jobs would still see the whole enchilada...
