Ben Franklin by far. I cant believe people actually voted for the top answer let alone enough to make It #1. By his logic my favorite American of all time(Lincoln) had more to do with the moon landing than Armstrong, because he invited the German Count Von Zeppelin to the states as a military observer during the civil war. While here he saw an observation balloon which inspired him to create the first zeppelin. This in turn inspired the Wright brothers. Then the first jet plane was used in WW2(ME262). Leading to the V2 rocket which was the exact design for the Apollo missions. There will always be vitally influential people around great people no one can do it alone. The reason I choose Ben Franklin over the other founding fathers is that the other founding fathers though great were politicians and statesmen which were vital but not unique(If Jefferson didn't write the constitution someone else would've). However the freethinking and innovative Franklin was very unique and just as vital to America's birth as Washington, Adams, Jefferson etc. I'm convinced that of all the founding fathers only Franklin would've been so successful as diplomat to France(without the treaty we would've lost the war).

Without any doubt whatsoever, the most important person in US history is George Washington due to the fact that Washington, as leader of the Continental Army was the only reason there was still a Continental Army at the end of the war. Had Washington not accepted the position of Commander of the Continental Army, the Continental Congress would have chosen someone much less qualified and much less charismatic, and the army would have undoubted disintegrated, but only after many lost battles. Thus the United States would have been crushed by the british army, and would not exist today. Basically, without Washington, there would be no U.S. history to speak of.

I agree with jedilogic. Without Abraham Lincoln (Read the book "Lincoln and His Generals" to find out what a pack of losers He had to deal with before striking Grant, Sherman and Sheridan) it doesn't matter what the founding fathers wanted. Lincoln PRESERVED the Union and gave Us what is now 50 states as opposed to 13-20 Confederate states and 30-37 Union states. Read some of Harry Turtledoves works..He's a master of alternative History and explores questions just like this.

It's funny that Abe Lincoln tops the list. I remember my history teacher years back telling us that if Abe Lincoln was running for office today, he wouldn't be elected because was a very depressed man and his opponent would use that to smear him. Although he was a great man, I think Martin Luther King Jr. was very important when he led the Civil Rights Movement. It's so hard to choose one person. There were countless of people who can be considered important in US history because they make this country great, like the soldiers that fight in our wars, the migrant workers who allow us to afford our fruits and veggies, the teachers who educate children ... you get the idea.

Agree with The Riddler. George Bush will be the most remembered person in history by destroying not just the USA, but Iraq and meddling in Australia, England and multitudes of other countries.

For those who say George Washington, I would disagree and say it was Nataniel Pope, who convinced George's greatgrandfather to stay in the colony and marry his daughter.
For those who say Thomas Jefferson, I would conter that if it was not for Thomas Walker who became Jefferson's guardian after his fathers death and encouraged him to study law and George Wythe who taught Jeferrson and many other important people of the time.
For those who say the founding fathers, I would susjest that their slaves where more important for without them they would not have had the pleasure of the riches which made them available to led the country instead of working their plantations.
For every person someone names I could conter with several others who without them that person would not have had the chance to be the most important person in American History.
