the detroit tigers by far are the biggest surprise in the majors this year. no baseball pundits, no fans, not the detroit media, or even most if not all of the players thought they would be in the situation they are in right now...looking back, we can see the foundation of this club set in with bonderman, maroth, etc.; but that's only when looking from now... this team has the players to be this year's white sox, but we'll see in october.

The Reds, no question. While a lot of people think it's detroit, they've been getting progressively better over the last 3 years plus added a 17 game winner (Kenny Rogers), so it's not as much of a surprise that they're doing well (though no one thought they'd do THIS well).

Cincy on the other hand, is virtually the same team as last year, with the addition of Arroyo (a journeyman nobody) and their rookie 2b who's just raking. Their rotation was dead last in the NL last year, now they're up near the top!? Plus they play in the toughest division in baseball. NO one thought Cincy would finish higher than 4th this year, and they're now the NL Central front runners.

My other big surprise (more like dissapointment) comes from the same division, and it's the Pirates. No one expected the Pirates to win the WS, but when they added burnitz, casey, joe randa, with jason bay, jack wilson, craig wilson, macowviak, gonzales, et. al, they were supposed to be at least a .500 ball club if not better. For them to just totally dissapear for the first half of this season is a major dissapointment and embarassment. At least people expected the Royals would suck.

Minor surprise - The entire NL west - Every team is at elast 2 games over .500, and every team is within 2 games of first! That's PHENOMINAL parity for baseball. Who'd have thought the AAA Rockies guest starring major leaguer Todd Helton would be over .500 by now? Who'd have guessed the Dodgers and Giants anywhere near first considering their injury issues? The Diamondbacks over .500 with the exact same team as last year? The Padres anywhere near .500 without Peavy pitching well at all? It'll be VERY interesting to see what these teams do by August.

Minor dissapointment - Washington Nationals - improved in the eyes of many, with soriano a better hitter than wilkerson and vidro healthy and playing fulltime at 2nd, these guys just haven't been competitive. Guillen's injury and subsequent down 1st half has hurt a lot, but they had enough talent to make up for a few of those lost rbis. They're foundering in a VERY weak NL east

Has to be Detroit. Last years team lost 91 games and finished almost 30 games behind the division winners. In the past four years they have had 2 (TWO!) years where they've lost more than a 100 games. That's a benchmark for badness- nobody wants to be on any baseball team that has lost 100+ games. This year because of their coach Jim Leyland and some aging arms that have really been throwing (and a great GM) they're a couple of games ahead of the White Sox. I don't think anyone would've predicted that .

It was only a few years ago that the Detroit Tigers almost broke the record for most losses in a season. They still have quite a few players from that team and they are kicking a*s. It's good to see them turn around, but being this good is shocking, even with Jim Leyland as the manager. I hope they make the "World" Series so the Cardinals can get revenge for 1968.

The Tigers have been teh biggest surprise, although that is a little unfair since we should have known they would at least be decent with Lelyand. Sure he doesn't know the AL but it isn't that much different. Those who thought he was too old are the ones that are really shocked.

Just about every expert picked Detroit and the Mets to step up before the season began, yet nobody saw the Reds coming.

That said, I don't think Cincy is good enough to hang around much longer...

The Detroit Tigers. At the beginning of the season no one thinks of teams like them when it comes to the playoffs because they are always somewhat in the background but that's what gives them the advantage and they are on fire!
