Do you think that the portrayal of beauty through the media by using models, airbrushing, and plastic surgery can affect self esteem?

Of course, just look at the statistics for teens, anorexia and bullemia. There is no doubt in my mind that it does.

Without question! I am 31 and it has taken me many years to finally realize that the media is selling you beauty. SELLING you. That means they have to make you feel unattractive or ugly to sell you something, right? Right! God forbid you feel fine "just the way you are". Then you are the weird one. The media just can't have that! They must chip away at every possible insecurity you may have. And create some you never thought about before! The media is just trying to show that there is an image that you absolutely must strive for and that you will have someday if you just buy their products!! But reality is, you will never achieve their standards because they keep raising the bar. It's very, very hard to fight the media...I personally have really restricted magazine purchases and the like...I don't want it in my face anymore.

No, I don't think it does. I don't think that people are that badly disconnected from reality that they can't tell the difference between a magazine covergirl and other girls at school.

Everyone who looks at magazines and watches television also lives in reality and goes to school, work, the store, DMV, etc.... Regular people haven't lost boyfriends to Angelina Jolie. Regular people see other regular women and men all over town every day, they know what they look like and how they measure up themselves. There is a stark contrast between celeberties and regular people that is obvious to anyone remotely connected to reality.

If there really are people who can't see that difference, then they have serious problems, more seroius than low self-esteem, and probably need professional help.

indefinitely. Think about this, say make up and surgery and being a size 0 didnt exist. things would be more real. But it's monkey see; monkey do, unfortunately. We think on tv is what we're supposed to do and look like right. What if there was no TV? We would be and do what we wanted. W/o so many worries. This is why it's always best to be yourself. Hollywood is very fake, even celebs admit that.

yes, it does. many end up feeling that their body is not good enough. they feel that they have to step it up a notch. like to have j.lo's *** or pamela anderson's boobs by taking plastic surgery. it's degrading, really. the media has pushed their self esteem lower and lower to a point that they feel their body is in need of perfection. but, on the other hand, these people shouldn't be easily influenced. they should be proud of what they already have. so, i think both are to blame.

YES BECAUSE THE MEDIA MAKES IT SEEM AS THOUGH ONE HAS TO BE PERFECT BY AIRBRUSHING AND ALL THE SPECIAL EFFECTS. PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE ARE NOT THAT FLAWLESS AND THAT IS THE MAIN REASON WHY SO MANY TEENS ARE DEPRESSED OR HAVE SOME TYPE OF EATING DISORDER. ALSO THE CELEBRITIES LIKE NICHOLE RICHIE WHO IS SOO SKINNY THAT SHE JUST LOOKS SOOO NASTY.WHY WOULDN'T SHE EVEN WANT TO LOOK LIKE THAT? SHE LOOKS LIKE A DEAD PERSON WALKING TO ME! PEOPLE ARE AFRAID OF GETTING OLD AND ARE SPENDING ALL THEIR MONEY ON THINGS TO GET RID OF WRINKLES, GETTING BOTOX AND ANY OTHER SURGERY! BUT I GUESS CELEBRITIES FEEL THAT THEY HAVE TO LOOK THEIR BEST BECAUSE MILLIONS OF PEOPLE ARE WATCHING THEM. I ALSO THINK SOME PEOPLE ARE OBSESSED WITH CELEBRITES! I HEARD THAT PEOPLE WERE WILLING TO PAY MILLIONS OF DOLLARS TO SEE BRAD AND ANGELINA'S BABY! THE PEOPLE ON TV DON'T LOOK REALISTIC I MEAN WHO HAS MAKE UP ON AND HAIR DONE AT ALL TIMES? I ALSO THINK THAT THE MEDIA IS IN CELEBRITIES LIVES TOO MUCH. WHY IS BRITNEY SPEARS AND JESSICA SIMPSON ON THE COVER OF EVERY PEOPLE'S MAGAZINE?

That is a postive YES! No one is perfect. THe media (MTV, VH1, Entertainment, ect.) puts out this perfect world that doesn't really exist. You cannot live your life worried about the media because it is too fake.
