my brother has had administrator power over this particular computer(which just happens to be mine) for years and i have had no prob;ems but recently some form of spyware has entered the computer and the disk is running extremely low on space. my brother has moved to india with his work and i need to fix this but his phone is currently offline. so, is there a way to eitherget the password without going as far as reformating or is that the only way? and if so, how exactly is the easiest way of reformating my computer(modified dell optiplex gx110 with windows xp, if that helps)

This should fix you up. Turn off the computer. Turn it back on and while it is booting up keep tapping F8 key to put you in the Safe Mode. The screen will be 'ugly' but the computer will function. Go straight to the user accounts and give yourself admin. privileges with no password at this point. Reboot the computer in the normal way and you should be logged on w/ admin. privileges. If you still have problems: go Dell.com and look for support.
Take it from there!

Expensive software programs to retrieve password or free Linux
boot floppy to let you reset it.
Unless you know exactly what you're going after, it may be a waste of time for you.
To reformat, use the restore Cd's from dell and boot with them and follow directions. All your data will be wiped out.
If you don't have a restore CD, Dell should provide them for you
for a small fee.
You can use an XP windows CD as well.

Only an admin can give a new account admin fetures so you are screwed there. Go into the windows folders & delete all password files. Then boot to dos, run windows setup & use the repair options so it restores the password files (but they will be unassigned so you can now create an admin account).

Re-boot and hit F8 key a few times when it is loading. You will see option to run PC in SAFE MODE. Select this, and when ready, goto Control Panel and USER ACCOUNTS and sort it from there.
