It started centuries ago when someone wished for something and it came true, but at the expense of someone else. For example: Lets say: A woman wishes for lots of money so she could buy all the things her family needs, and a few days later, her husband, whom she loves dearly, dies in a car wreck. A week later she receives an insurance policy check in the amount of $ 100,000.00, (a life insurance policy she didn't know her husband had), well, she got her wish, she had all the money she wanted, ( but at the expense of her husband)! That's what they mean by: Be careful of what you wish for!

A wish is usually something that you are unable to get on your own at the moment, or never, for whatever reason, lets say that you are 13 and wish for a fast sports car, well first you can't drive it, either legally or experience wise, so if this wish came true, you would have a difficult time just letting it sit in your driveway or letting you mom have all the fun in driving it, so you will take it for a spinnnnnnnnnnnnnn, now for sure you will want to show it off to at least one Friend......so you and your friend are out cruising, you have see how fast it will go......right? Well there you have it a shiny new Lamborghini, then the police show up........or worse yet they don't so you go faster and faster, lose control, and crash, either you or your friend or both die or are badly injured...............schreeeeeeeeeeeeech you wait , finish school, become a wealthy and then you would not have to wish for the car, you just go and buy it.
This is just an example, but a wish is usually something that you are not able to get on your own, at least for the moment.

Because when you wish for something usually it's only because you can't have it. And when you finally do get it, you could be taking it away from someone who really deserves it. Plus Karma usually will take it away if you really don't deserve it. Ever heard of the three fold rule? When/if it's taken away it can be hitting you hard times three. What goes around comes around? Turn about is fair play?

in mythology when ever possible the granted wish will have an unwelcome consequence like the greek king midas and his wish for the golden touch.
more often
wishes are granted by captive spirits or capricious beings
leprechauns, landed mermaids, talking fish, genies in bottles
things of that sort are not happy to be trapped and forced to grant wishes. and will do what they can to harm the wisher by twisting the results of the wish.

People say be careful what you wish for because sometimes, when you finally get what you wish for it doesn't always give you the end that you were seeking for.

The difference between wishing for something, and working for it is; wishing doesn't take you through the proper steps to get it. So, other, unwanted things can happen.

Because you might not get exactly what you want. Like, lets say a teenager is frustated with her mother and wishes that her mother would stop bothering her. Something happens and her mother dies. Well, she got what she wished for, her mother can no longer bother her. But, she lost her mother permently. Probably not quite what she had in mind. Thus, be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.

because some times what you wish for can be harmful to you and perhaps to someone else. you may think you are getting what you wish for but as you look at the big picture it may not be what you actually wanted. there is always some string attached to every wish\

because all wishes have a consequence and could possibly alter other things, and your true course in life. Kind of like the butterfly effect... you should watch that. Of course, that doesn't have wishing involved... but it has the same concept.
