If you must know, the answer is within the question. For years people have been trying to answer it. When all along the answer was there. It is really a trick question. Meant to make you think.
The Answer:
The Egg came first. Because the egg came before the chicken.
The Reason:
The question doesn't ask what kind of egg. It is assumed the author meant "Chicken". But, chickens aren't the only things that lays (laid) egg. Dinosaurs laid eggs and they were here long before the Chicken was. Thus... The egg was the actual answer.

Which came first? The chicken or the egg? First I ate the chicken, and then I ate it's egg. The best thing is to have chicken omlets. That is the most insulting thing you can do is fry an adult creature, and add it to the scrambled up fetus'es of it's own children.

The chicken came first so it could run and fly away to live another day to eat and have eggs to further the species. An egg would not have made it past a hungry critter's salivating taste buds.

OK first came the dinosaur which gradually evoled into the chicken by laying eggs which laid an egg which gave birth to another chicken!

With the theory of evolution in mind, the egg obviously came first since dinasaurs came well before the evolution of the chicken. Dinosaurs laid their eggsand then somehow or another, a chicken came along through DNA reorganization (as crazy as it may sound) that lead to what we have digesting in our stomachs today.

a live-birth animal can evolve into an egg laying animal over time, and it takes an animal to create an egg, so the chicken came first.
