My laptop can connect to the net, but my desktop cannot. My desktop does not have a DNS suffix, or a default gateway, and the subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 and my laptop's is 255.255.248.0. How can I get my desktop and my roommates computer to connect?

I just recently had to troubleshoot a situation such as this, and the problem ended up being the ethernet card itself. If your laptop has been connecting to the internet wirelessly, try attaching it to the LAN to make sure it's not a problem with the ethernet ports on the modem or router. Hope this helps.

The fact that you are not getting a default gateway indicates the computer is not communicating with the network. It is essential to know what ip address is assigned and what kind of router you are connected to.
