The car is a 2001 VW GTI VR6. I drive it about 70 miles each day of mostly highway miles.

replace the shocks/struts. a worn shock/strut will allow the tire to bounce as you drive the car. everytime the tire goes down, the extra pressure is causing the tire to rub against the pavement and wearing it out in spots. alignment is also necessary.

My first thought would be the alignment, but also how old are the tires? How much wear was on them to begin with. The older a tire is the softer it gets and the more suseptable to flat spotting after getting hot by highway speeds. Being its a 6 year old car and just a round figure guess around 92000 miles on it check the ball joints and struts plus rotors for warpage. Wheel damage is possible if curbed but most likely the suspension. Hope that this helps!

I am guessing that it is the front tires showing the abnormal wear, you may just need a wheel alignment at your local service center. They will be able to tell you if there are worn parts on your car causing the problem such as tie rod ends, ball joints, etc. I would first check to see if my tires are balenced properly, this has to be checked by taking the tires off and placing them on a machine every tire shop has. Hope this helps

I have seen tires using the newer softer rubber out today to try to be a all around tire have a problem with flat spotting due to lack of rotation and balance.

Think of it this way.. If I spun you around and hit you in the same spot every time, don't you think after a while you would be sore and possibly get flatter in that area due to wear?

That's the main reason behind rotation and balance for.

Might need an alignment. Some or most places will do 4 wheel alignments. Could also be bad tires but I would lean toward the alignment.

Elves. They come at night and file away at your tires--they use they filed off parts as soup thickener.
