Acoustic or Electric.
A Squire Stratocaster is a good electric choice, they are nice and playable, even pros use them. (I play session guitar, but rarely, I'm a session piano player/composer, I have a squire Bullet, it's a fantastic little practice instrument.) Avoid Gibsons, as these are much higher end style guitars, and the epiphone versions often compromise quality for price.
Acoustic, go with whatever feels the best in your hand. Takamine and Ovation make some good lower priced guitars. Taylor, Martin, and the like should be avoided unless they are the baby models, as these are massively expensive and an investment of $1k+ will be needed to get their lowest level decent quality guitars.

If your looking for a acoustic, try a Ovation. It's good to start out on. But is your serious about the guitar, you should get a good one that you will have for a while, and get used to. Ovation is a good one. You'll have it for a while, if you take care of it, like any other instrument.

Yamaha makes good inexpensive acoustic guitars. You could get a new one for around $150 or a little less.
Also, Fender and Epiphone have good inexpensive guitars.

Get one with a maple neck light color not a rosewood neck. The maple or clear neck is easier to slide your hand down. And get one with a double humbucker will be OK. And one that you can afford to pay for with out taking a loan from a bank.

If you are taking lessons you should discuss it with your teacher and determine your budget beforehand - you can spend five hundred dollars to $25,000 on a guitar. Your instructor should be able to point you in the right direction based on your intentions and budget. If you are not taking lessons then you should be.
