Ring of Fire is a country music song popularized by Johnny Cash, although it was originally written by June Carter and Merle Kilgore, and recorded by Anita Carter in 1962. The song documents June Carter's feelings of conflict arising from her relationship with Cash, and his drug addiction, with the refrain:
I fell into a burning ring of fire
I went down, down, down
And the flames went higher
And it burns, burns, burns
The ring of fire
The ring of fire
Cash's major contribution to the song, besides his baritone recitation of the lyrics, was the addition of a mariachi-style horn section, an innovation that Cash claimed came to him in a dream (he also used the horn section in "It Ain't Me Babe", recorded around the same time). He recorded the song on March 25, 1963, and it quickly reached #1 on the country music charts.
The song was later covered by other artists, including Wall of Voodoo, Frank Zappa (a mocking parody version), Dwight Yoakam, Ray Charles, Grace Jones, Social Distortion, H-Blockx, Dick Dale, Coldplay and The String Cheese Incident. The song was also among a number of Cash songs covered by Joaquin Phoenix for the film Walk the Line.
