First, you need to pull back the carpet to see if there is any mold growing underneath it. If there is mold, take up the carpet at the doorway of the closet. Clean the floor with a vinegar and water mix. Spray the backside of the carpet with a 10% mix of water and bleach. Let dry naturally, hang it on a line outside if you want. When carpet piece is dry, clean it with a spray carpet cleaner and vacuum. Both sides. After this is dry, place back into closet. The vinegar and water solution should have taken care of the odor in the closet. Hope this helps.

Not sure maybe some frebreeze. Or alittle vinegar and water in a bowl, it takes out smoke smells in a room. Or try a box of freezer baking soda, just put a box in your closet for a couple of days. Hope it helps

sit an open box of baking soda in the closet and shut the door. You could pour some on the carpet and vaccum it up when the smell is gone also.

First of all you need to see if the carpet is dis-colored to a gray or black....if so it is a mold that has to be removed....cleaning it will not work...the spors will continue to grow....if this is mold I would cut out that carpet and get rid of it...make sure if you do have to remove it you bag it right away......the spor will go everywhere and grow more...and if you leave that carpet there and it gets wet again the mold will return 10 fold....

Use a fan to move the musty air out. You have to dry it out completely. If there is mildew in the sheetrock, you may need to replace it with new. If there is moisture in the insulation, you may need to replace it with new.

It all has to be totally dry, then the baking soda may work.
