1. Good communicator - keeps you aware of what is going on in the business, and is very clear when giving direction
2. Non-threatening management style. Managers who threaten are trying to do what's best for ~their~ career, not yours. I'd want a manager with a collaborative style, who is committed to developing me and helping me get promoted.
3. A leader who rewards good work with new challenges and opportunities. If I do well at something, I want my manager to tell me I did well, and give me some say in what I do next - and help develop areas I want to develop.

experience: someone who has been there before, and knows the job description, and its problems and solutions like the back of their hand.
empathy: the ability to see things from the employee's viewpoint as well as the company's, and bring the two together to a manageable whole.
empowerment: the ability to "do something" without having to check with the higher-ups. what is the sense in a supervisor who is only a message-boy (or woman)?
a good supervisor is a motivator, making employees WANT to succeed.

Family oriented, good leadership skills, responsible, knows when to lead and when too let the workers police themselves.
