I plan on getting a tattoo of a butterfly made out a scar that I have from my struggle with self-injury. I want to get the butterfly over the scar to remind me of the changes I have made and to love who I am now. Maybe other women with these tattoos have meanings attached to them as well.

I just got a tattoo a little over a month ago. Here's what I experienced: the tattoo will lose some ink, and as it heals it will crack and flake a bit, especially shortly after you shower. It will also become a bit lighter. All of this is completely normal. Wash it with anti-bacterial soap daily and use the ointment and plastic wrap. I used Aquaphor (available at Walgreen or CVS) ointment and Dial antibacterial soap. Do not rub or scratch the tattoo. Wait for another three to four days. By then you should be able to take the wrap off and the tattoo should look a little lighter. Wash it, dry it, and inspect it to see if any major parts came off. If so, wait a little longer (another week or two) to make sure it's completely healed before touching up.

I'm as old as a grandmother and I don't understand why tattoos are so popular. Young people like to be the same as other people their age,and tattoos are really in style right now. I agree with the other answer; if you don't want a tattoo stand up

Some girls like that kinda thing and there may be a reasoning behind why they get those. I am one of those that want a tacky in the extreme butterfly though not on my shoulder. Butterflies, to me symbolizes freedom and we all want that. Anyway, to each his own, someone wants a skull and crossbones it doesnt bother me so why should what I have bother them.

Yeah..i guess tattoos are ok but it doesnt really matter what the tattoo is, when you get older they start heading south so i dont think i would ever get one but if i ever did it would be something unique like my name in cherokee cause i wouldnt want to be like everybody else.

It is really tacky. I can say this because two of my sisters have really tacky tattoos of flowers, Chinese symbols and butterflies. They don't have the same tattoos but they both have really tacky flowers.

I have tinker bell on my shoulder, but only because I have always liked tinker bell for as long as I can remember and people have always identified it with me. Otherwise I would have gotten something else. I agree that the rose is overdone though.

Swallows and roses and '40s pinup art.
Too over-done.
