Your computer call their computer then it answers back and then it uses a verification to see if you supplied the right user name .
Double click your connection and the details and you'll what type your connection is called.
If you just dial the number you log in with you can here how the remote computer answers back ..It will change notes to try to get you to answer back.

I agree that dial-up modems do produce strange noises, but don't worry....it's normal and they all do it. What's actually happening is that you are connecting to another modem at your ISP and it is going through a process called "hand-shake". If the noises bothers you, you can always turn down the volume.

Just like your regular phone the modem has to call the service provider. After they reach it they establish a connection and finally authenticate your access with the username and password
