yeah...this happens to me ALL THE TIME.
It depends on whether or not the headphones are expensive or not.

If they are...
First try to get them replaced under the warranty (if it hasn't expired yet) or return them to the store where you bought them.

The problem might be a dirty plug -- you might try cleaning it off with rubbing alcohol. Also, the problem might be your music device. Try plugging your headphones into something else, and see if the problem persists.

Since you said that the right side works fine, it leads me to believe you have a short near the left ear phone, instead of near the plug--if it was the plug, both sides would tend to short out.

If you're good with your hands, you might try cracking your headset open. First, find where the short is: plug them in, turn on your music, and then, starting where the wire comes out of the set, bend the wire back and forth between your fingertips, moving along the wire to the plug. If your left ear starts working again, you've found the short.

Usually, the wires inside the cup pull off of the speaker (or the circuit board, in noise-cancelling sets), or a short develops right under the cup. Also, shorts like to happen right around the plug--if this is the case, you can replace the end with one from Radio Shack. It won't look as nice, but it'll work.

Try taking the ear cup apart (if it's a full size set) or try popping apart the bud (if it's an in-the-ear set). On full-sized sets, you can carefully pull off the padding, and then you will find the screws which hold the cups together, on the part that sits against your ear.

Then, you can replace the wire with a new one (they have them at...R. Shack. Where else?). You'll need an x-acto blade or wire stripper, a soldering iron or "gun" -- you can get one for a couple of bucks--, and some rosin-core electrical solder. Usually, there are two wires, one "ground" and one "power", just like in a car. It doesn't matter the order that you solder them back, just make sure that you get the ends thoroughly embedded in the solder. Some wires have a special coating, and some have a second round of insulation (you may have to trim this off, as well). Then, test them quickly by plugging them into your music device and turning it on. Last, put 'em back together.

If they aren't expensive...
Throw 'em out and get a new pair. Radio Shack had a sale last week on full-sized ones, for $9.99. I got a pair. They're grrrrrrrrrreat! (And no, I don't work for them, or spend an inordinate amount of time in their stores).

however scullcandy isn't customary for nice high quality, the Hesh 2.0 is extremely tremendous high quality for hip hop/rap and determination rock. they actually have quite sturdy bass(im speaking complete volume will make your head vibrate sturdy). if you're listening to pop i'd recommend sony headphones or audio technica, any of them quite. they're typically tremendous. do exactly not get BEATS. they provide the effect of being cool and they are subsidized through each rapper there is and some pop artists yet in words of sound high quality they're only no longer that sturdy. also for more desirable noise cancelation you should get well from ear headphones because on ear or in ear dont cancel noise a lot if in any respect.

Well, if it was really cheap i would personally buy a new one. BUt if you bought one of the higher end ones I would have it serviced or return it for another one. If you bought it from ebay your out of luck or if you got it from online you might want to send a letter about the problem and see if they could help.

You have either a loose or broken wire or connection. You can splice the wire if it is the wire. If not buy a new set.
