I'm gald you are stepping up and helping this guy. Good for you. Start with the on button and power. Then move to softwear. The best way to teach is to ask him what he wants to do with the laptop. That way you are teaching to his intersts. It is very important that you DO NOT TOUCH the laptop. Tell him what to do and let him press the buttons. When it comes to hardwear just tell him that each plug has a very spacific hole. He will be fine as long as he doesn't try to force a square peg into a round hole.

OK well once the laptop or PC starts, show him the mouse, how it works which button does what, how to move the arrow, how to open an icon ( tell him pictures he'll get it instead of icons) then show him basic uses of computers such as typing up something!
whatever you do DONT GO TELL HIM ABOUT BOOT SEQUENCES or FIREWALL ANTIVIRUS THIS AND THAT that has a 99% probablity that will confuse him and make his lose interest. Always start off easy. then do a little exam on him, show him how to start the pc then show him about the reset button (if destop) which is the best friend for a newby.then move the mouse tell him about it... what ever your going to make him do in the exam, you do it first, so he doesnt get confused... if he gets stuck, show him the way.... anywho... GOOD LUCK!

The other suggestions here are very good. I'd just like to add one more....you might recommend that he purchase and go over a "Windows For Dummies" book for whatever version of Windows that he has. After all, you can't be with him 24/7.

first, teaching him how to handle a mouse
second, Don't teach him anything else, just Windows programs like note, control panel, paint brush (if you are using windows)
third, how to print a simple document

well if he doesn't know anything at all about PC's, then why don't you start by showing him what's what on the laptop and what each thing does. Take it slowly and make sure he understands what you are telling him.
