No you shouldn't ever put a betta in a vase with a plant!!!! (Well that's not completely true, but nearly everyone does it WRONG.)

Anyway it really depend on your tastes, and tank size. Be sure to check compatibility, and minimu tank size. Stores like petco/petsmart will generally rate fish community, semi aggressive, and really agressive (aka cichlids). Don't try mixing them.
Community- Sail fin mollies, dwarf gourami, fancy guppies, sword tails, galss cats a male betta, or a couple of females are okay if you don't have guppies.
Note the livebearers (mollies, swords, guppies) breed like crazy so I often add a bumblebee catfish, or angelfish to eat the fry, and it does don't eat my other fish,
Semi aggressive- Angel Fish, larger gouramis
Aggressive (aka cichlids)- Ask someone else don't as own them, and think they are mostly ugly.

Blood Parrot Cichlids are wonderful fish. They are hybrids and some pet stores are ethically against selling them, however, they are still easy to find. They are cute, interesting with unique, genuine personalities, and they live for many years. I would never keep a freshwater tank without them. Be careful-if you put in tiny fish with adult parrots you'll be short some fish in the morning.

I love cichlids and you can get them most anywhere. Best to buy from a cichlid store/specialty aquarium cichlid store- not petco, etc. They are colorful fish for being freshwater. Some are very aggressive and it's not good to mix certain cichlids with others or with other breeds. Be careful and research. Fish are a great hobby. Enjoy!

Depending on the size of your tank, cichlids are my favourite.
Remember to do a lot of research before deciding on which type of fish you want. Many fish look cute when they are small but quickly outgrow the tank they were meant for.

African ciclids. They do often school well, and have beautiful colors. Just dont get the lake maui mixed up with other kinds. They get agressive to fish from other lakes though. but they do get fairly big. How big is your aquarium?? 20gal or less?? 65gal or more?? My father and i fit our 13 ciclids and one plecostamous in a 65gal. tank juat fine, and the nitrite/nitrate levels stay balanced. it's ll about tank size.

www.liveaquaria.com
Click on the "fish" button then click on "freshwater".
Live Aquaria is a great site with loads of free information. You can see pictures of the fish and get all the info you'll need to stock your aquarium like compatibility, what foods to feed the fish the water quality they need to flourish. I did all my research at Live Aquaria before starting my tank.
Good luck!

African Ciclids are the best! They're beautiful and come in a variety of colors and shapes. And they get fairly big depending on the size of the tank.

I've always thought rainbow tetras are good. They are easy to care for, brightly colored, and fun to watch. If you put several in a tank together they school together nicely.
