Staking young trees should only be done as a last resort. Some trees are really weak and may need it for a season, however over staking can make your tree even weaker in the long run. When you see a young tree blowing in the wind, that wind is actually making the trunk of your tree stronger by the swaying motion, Much like building muscles in people. Over staking prevents this essential movement and the tree then depends on that stake as a crutch. The roots also benefit from this movement and the tree will grow deeper root systems that are needed to support It in rough weather as it ages. It's the same principle of over babying anything. If you over shelter it it will never learn to take care if itself.

staking is useless if your tree is planted in an area where it must "reach" for sunlight. It will grow toward the closet source of direct sunlight. Other than that, from an arborist point of view, let the tree sort of develop a character of it's own and when you prune in the springtime you can help it take the shape that you like.
p.s. staking your tree will not harm it, but it's just not neccesary!

At least for the first couple of years. Make sure the wrap around the tree has hose or something other than wire. Don't want to cut into the bark of the baby tree. I check my stakes to make sure they aren't rubbing the bark off or hanging loosely. They should be snug not choking.

Yes.....but when you tie it use a piece garden hose about 12 inchs long and run your rope or wire through it so you don't chaf the young tender bark of the tree. Stake it in 3 directions to provide equal tension in all directions.

it depends on the species, but yes, its always a good idea.
just be sure you thread the wire or string that contacts the tree through a section of garden hose, otherwise the tree may grow around the wire, and you wont be able to get it out without cutting the tree.

No, trees have rights too! Stalking is an invasion of privacy and just plain wrong!

Helps to keep the wind from blowing them over. Not a bad idea to do it.
