Hawaiian would be fun. There are a lot of possibilities for decorations and it would be economical (cheap), but fun. Give everyone a Hawaiian lei, purchase cheap flip-flops for each person to decorate with glitzy rhinestones or torn fabric tied on, decorate cheap sunglasses, too. Make grass skirts; decorate t-shirts with puff paints with flowered designs. Serve tropical fruits- pineapple, kiwi, bananas, coconut, etc. Learn to hula. Aloha!

It's great to do a themed b-day party. I have to plan events that require a theme--one thing I like to do is look at what's hot in the movies and develop a theme around that--This summer you could do a super hero theme or a pirate theme--whatever you decide be creative and talk about it to your friends that will be coming to the party so they are hyped up about and more willing to participate in the activities.

The best party I went to was a Shang-hai party - kind of a reverse surprise party.
My friend's mom called my mom and let her know that there was going to be a party and not to tell me. Mom went and got a birthday present and card and hid it until I was "shang-hai'd" by my friend's mom and taken to the party. I ended up getting kidnapped in my pjs. :)
When we got to her house there were all these paper lanterns and other oriental decorations. We had Chinese food and cake and got fortune cookies and really nice lacquered chopsticks to take home.
